Water Damage Cleanup Assessing and Dealing with Specific Damage

Assessing Water Damage
After a flood or any other water damage event, it's crucial to assess the extent of the damage thoroughly. This involves:
- Identifying the source of the water damage
- Determining the type of water (e.g., clean water, sewage)
- Assessing the affected areas and materials
- Documenting the damage with photos and videos
Dealing with Specific Damage: Wood Disinfection
Wood is a particularly vulnerable material to water damage. When submerged in water for an extended period, wood can swell, warp, and become a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. It's essential to disinfect wood promptly to prevent further damage and health hazards.
How to Disinfect Wood After a Flood
- Remove Excess Water: Use a wet/dry vacuum or absorbent towels to remove as much water as possible from the wood.
- Apply Bleach Solution: Mix a solution of 1 cup household bleach per gallon of clean water. Apply the solution to the wood using a sponge or spray bottle.
- Allow to Soak: Let the bleach solution soak into the wood for at least 10 minutes to kill mold and bacteria.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse the wood with clean water to remove any residual bleach solution.
- Dry Completely: Use a fan or dehumidifier to dry the wood thoroughly. Ensure it is entirely dry before using it again.
Note: Before applying any solutions, test a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it does not damage the wood finish.
